Creating Art Using the Moiré Effect
Hello! Today, I want to share my memories from participating in the Tokyo Design Week in 2017. At that time, I was an undergraduate student involved in this event. The theme of the competition was “Interactive,” which meant that the art pieces were designed not just to be viewed but to inspire action among the visitors.
Based on this theme, we created an art piece utilizing a visual effect known as the “Moiré effect.”
What is the Moiré Effect?
The Moiré effect occurs when overlapping patterns interfere with each other, creating new patterns or movements. By using this effect, we aimed to create a piece that would induce a sense of dizziness in the viewers. The idea was to provide an experience that plays with visual perception.
The Creation Process
What’s particularly interesting is the material we used to achieve the Moiré effect. We overlapped two simple screen doors to produce this phenomenon. This idea was not only cost-effective but also delivered a visually striking impact. I found great appeal in the ability to provide a surprising art experience through such simple material combinations.
Audience Reactions
During the exhibition, many visitors were intrigued by our work and approached it closely. The visual movement created by the Moiré effect prompted a fascinating sensation that made people instinctively move their bodies. Especially the tension felt when approaching the piece and witnessing the changes in patterns right before their eyes provided a refreshing and stimulating experience for many.
In Conclusion
This project was a valuable opportunity to expand the possibilities of interactive art. I’m delighted that our piece utilizing the Moiré effect could offer visitors a new experience. I’m also excited to see how such ideas will influence future art and design.
I want to continue exploring the interesting aspects of how art can inspire people’s actions and create new experiences.
